You are alive for a reason.
But you won’t find it by chasing passion.
And it’s not hiding in your hobbies or interests.
The answer lies in a place most people never look.
And until you do, life will feel a little off — like something’s missing.
Let’s break down the four steps to finally figure out why you’re here.
Step One: Face The Question
Why are you alive? Not in the abstract — you, right now. Why are you here? Everyone feels this question, whether they admit it or not.
But most people don’t face it.
When the question bubbles to the surface, they push it back down, look the other way, and hope the feeling goes away.
But it doesn’t.
That’s not how dragons work.
When you catch a glimpse of something terrifying — Like the possibility your life might not have any real meaning — And you look away…That dragon doesn’t disappear.
It retreats to the shadows, where it grows sharper teeth, thicker scales, and stronger fire.
As a dragon grows, your life shrinks.
Avoiding it doesn’t protect you; it makes it worse**.**
Your courage erodes. Your energy fades. Your clarity vanishes. Until you’re just going through the motions… afraid to ask why.
So what’s the alternative?
Exactly what you’re doing right now.
You’re facing it.
Not all at once, but enough to say:
“I don’t know why I’m here — but I’m ready to find out.”
And that’s where everything changes.
Step Two: Your “Why” Is Just Two “Who’s”
Most people search for their purpose in all the wrong places.
They chase passions. Follow trends. Obsess over missing pieces in their current life.
In his book Start With Why, Simon Sinek teaches us to ask two of the only questions that actually matter:
- Who do I want to become?
- Who do I want to serve?
That’s it. That’s your why.
And the sooner you answer those questions, the clearer everything becomes.
1. Who do you want to become?
People get stuck because they’re trapped in the present.
They obsess over what they don’t have.
They stare at what’s missing, as if they’re frozen in time.
But life is not static. It flows.
Heraclitus said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he is not the same man.”
Because the river is always changing.
And so are you.
Your future self is being shaped right now by how you live today.
You’re either becoming someone by default — or someone by design.
Simon Sinek said it best:
You have to decide who you want to become before you can become it.
If you don’t, you’ll drift into a life you didn’t choose — and become someone you were never meant to be.
Carl Jung said it another way:
If you don’t know what kind of story you’re in… it might be a tragedy.
2. Who do you want to serve?
You don’t live in a vacuum.
The worst thing we can do to a human being is put them in solitary confinement.
Why? Because we’re wired for connection.
We’re meant to live for something beyond ourselves. We’re meant to live with and for other people.
So this question — “Who do I want to serve?” — Isn’t separate from the first. It’s an extension of it.
Want to be a good husband?
That’s really asking: “How can I best serve my wife?”
Want to build a powerful career?
Ask: “Whose problems am I here to solve?”
Your purpose doesn’t begin with your passions.
It begins with people.
Your purpose isn’t a mystery. It’s two questions — and two people.
Who you’re becoming.
And who you’re here to serve.
Step 3: Aim Higher & Higher Over Time
Some people seem to keep rising — while others stay stuck.
Why?
Because of how they aim.
Those who grow are aiming upward — always toward something greater.
Those who shrink aren’t aiming at all. They’re drifting.
You might think the opposite of aiming up is aiming down.
But it’s not.
The opposite of aiming up… is settling, not aiming at all, letting life happen to you.
When you aim at the highest future you can see from where you are, your life expands.
When you don’t, it contracts.
And at some point in that upward aim, the question of God becomes unavoidable.
Now, before you roll your eyes — let’s redefine “God.”
Not a man in the sky judging you from above…
But the ground of being itself.
The mystery behind all reality.
The One who made something out of nothing.
That which is both highest and deepest.
And He has a purpose for your life more powerful than you can imagine.
Your job is to bring that version of you into the world.
You’ve felt it — that whisper in the silence, nudging you toward something greater.
“If you’ll face the dragon,” it says,
“You’ll become the kind of person who can.”
That journey — out of comfort, into the unknown, to fight dragons and bring gold back to your people — is the real reason you’re here.
And in a life well-lived, that journey never ends.
So don’t just ask “Who do I want to become?” Ask, “who does God want me to become?” Instead of asking, “Who do I want to serve?” Ask, “Who does God want me to serve?”
Because when you aim higher than yourself…
You build a life far greater than anything you could imagine alone.
But that kind of clarity only comes with real commitment:
- Soul searching.
- Submitting your will.
- Leaving the old stories behind.
- Walking into the unknown to find your people.
You’re not here to drift.
You’re here to aim.
And aim up.
Step 4: The Path Reveals Itself As You Walk It
Faith isn’t about believing in fairytales.
It’s about trusting the structure of reality —
Believing that when you do what’s right,
Your life gets better.
And the world around you does too.
That kind of faith is exactly what you need to answer the question:
“Why am I alive?”
Not faith in outcomes.
Not faith in comfort.
Faith in the next step.
Because that’s all you’ll ever really see.
You won’t get a flawless, five-year map.
You won’t ever have absolute clarity.
There are no guarantees.
But you will see just enough to take one more step.
And when you take it, the path expands.
Every step forward reveals more.
And that’s the truth most people miss.
Eventually, this truth becomes so clear — so obvious —
That you stop walking in fear…and start walking in trust.
You realize: God really does have your back.
And when you feel that?
You stop walking.
You start to run.
And from that moment on, everything changes —
Not just your world…
The whole world.
Conclusion
Mark Twain once said, “The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.”
If you don’t know why you are alive yet —
Decide today to begin the journey.
Not someday. Not when life feels easier.
Today.
Because there is nothing more powerful,
Nothing more beautiful,
Nothing more glorious,
Than a life lived in full alignment
With your unique purpose on Earth.
